Michel Tremblay wrote a play for his mother. But this is no ordinary dedication. Tremblay’s mother didn’t live to see her son go on to be Canada’s most produced playwright. But on Wednesday July 11th audiences at Mt. Tabor theatre are going to be treated to a…visitation of sorts.
Festival Players of Prince Edward County is kicking off their sixth season with Tremblay’s well-loved For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again/Encore une fois si vous permettez. It’s a new production of an iconic Canadian play, including performances in English et en français.
For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again/Encore une fois si vous permettez, by Michel Tremblay and translated by Linda Gaboriau, offers a compelling balance of humour and poignancy. In it, Tremblay offers glimpses of himself and his mother at five different stages of their lives together.
“It really is as though he conjured her, for one last visit. To see her, to speak with her again. This play is a tribute to Tremblay’s mother, ultimately. Their relationship is fabulous,” says Artistic Director Sarah Phillips. “She’s got this acerbic wit and a penchant for – let’s call it ‘inventive’ storytelling. He grew up in the 40’s and 50’s on the Plateau in Montreal. His working class roots and his rich family life are all part of what we get to see here. It’s magical. Truly. And the cast is positively Olympic in their ability to alternate working on the show in both languages. It’s been quite a process for them.”
Festival Players’ bilingual cast will perform this piece in its original French text (Encore une fois si vous permettez) on select nights.
“One of those rare pieces of theatre that manages to be both moving and hilarious”
– Toronto Star
For the Pleasure… helmed by award-winning director Craig Holszchuh, (Artistic Director of Théâtre la Seizième, Vancouver), and performed by Montreal’s Rachel Robillard and Ottawa’s Paul Rainville (who Festival Players audiences will remember from the 2011 hit, The Ballad of Weedy Peetstraw).
Festival Players of Prince Edward County is a professional theatre company led by Artistic Director Sarah Phillips (alumna of the National Theatre School, Dora-nominated creator, Red Red Rose Theatre, Toronto). The 2012 season also includes In the Wake, by award-winning Calgary ensemble Downstage Theatre, Ken Cameron’s Harvest, and Sounding Ground, a series of audio plays written for and about downtown Picton.
